Techie at heart. Accountable for the whole picture.
Rob Polocz is a technology consultant, author, and former CTO and CIO with more than 25 years in software development, enterprise architecture, and technology leadership.
He has advised more than 100 companies, built products, led technical teams, and helped businesses grow. He brings those perspectives into the same room, so the people building a solution and the people depending on it can move together.
Different organizations, different obstacles. These engagements show how Rob connects technical judgment with the business result that matters.
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Restore stability. In a two-week engagement.
Rob joined to repair broken integrations and restore stability to the environment. The assignment called for getting up to speed quickly and resolving the technical problems already disrupting the work.
A focused intervention to get existing systems working again.
Beth Israel Lahey Health
Three months to go-live. A workstream to recover.
Rob joined a major system implementation three months before launch. He provided the technical leadership to bring the workstream back on track and support a successful implementation.
Direction and technical follow-through when the deadline was close.
DoorDash
Make a complex process easier to complete.
Rob led the creation of a performance-management application, from requirements and discovery through execution. Role-based guidance helped employees and managers navigate the process.
Results included a 21% decrease in service-desk tickets and a 17% increase in process compliance.
Enterprise integration
Connect the systems. Keep the business moving.
For a large online retailer, Rob led architecture design and prototyping for an integration layer connecting more than 200 systems. He brought internal teams together around a roadmap and reusable components built with AWS services.
A shared technical foundation for a complex operating environment.
Working with Rob
Candid about the work. Committed to the team.
Make the hard things discussable.
A disagreement can look personal when the real issue is an unclear requirement or a tradeoff nobody has named. Rob brings the conversation back to the work: what needs to happen, what is in the way, and what decision will move it forward.
Know when to step in.
Rob can challenge a technical assumption, troubleshoot with a developer, or bring the right people together. He gives experienced team members room to do their work and follows through on the commitments around it.
Look around the next corner.
Experience means recognizing a dependency or a missed requirement before it becomes a last-minute surprise. Your team gets someone who can think ahead while staying close to what needs doing today.

Don McDougal’s advance review of Dealing with Carbon-Based Life Forms
I am delighted that Rob Polocz has finally found the time to write this book. I have had the good fortune of working alongside Rob for much of my career—as his colleague, his boss across several companies, his co-inventor on a patent, and, above all, his friend. In every one of those roles, one thing has never changed: Rob is the person who leads on technology. He is a true AI pioneer—not merely because he saw it coming, but because he was already applying AI in real, practical ways while most companies were still trying to form an initial understanding of it. And he has always been generous in sharing and developing his teams, to bring them along.
I have been in the technology evolution game my whole career, and I understand it better than most—but Rob has a rarer gift still. He can translate the technobabble into plain management speak, so that those of us who steer the business can actually make good decisions. That gift is the beating heart of this book. Time and again over the years, Rob has stood in the gap between the engineers who think in algorithms and the leaders who think in outcomes, and he has made both sides smarter for it.
If you are a technologist who wants to be understood—or a leader who wants to finally understand your technologists—read this book. Rob has spent his entire career bridging these two worlds, and now he has handed you the map.

Products & innovation
Ideas that became working software.
Rob’s leadership stays connected to the craft. He has designed solutions, written code, led teams, and worked through the practical decisions needed to bring a product to market.
01
AI Translation Generator
Designed and built during a 24-hour hackathon, then developed into a commercial product. Rob led the team, designed the solution, coded the integration between Workday and AWS, and coordinated the approvals and resources for launch.
02
AI Timesheet Agent
Turned an everyday administrative burden into a working prototype in 24 hours. Rob conceived the idea, led the team, and coded and trained the agent. The work went on to launch as a product.
03
Standardized Contracts
Translated a legal-services business model into a customer-facing web application on Google Cloud. His work covered product, architecture, development, deployment, and operations. The application is no longer active; the project remains an example of taking an idea through launch.
